Communications & Public Relations Skills

There is some cross-over between the skill-sets required for a Communications or a Public Relations role, however I’ve generally seen that Communications roles primarily deal with building and managing internal relationships and implementing broader communication plans to internal and external stakeholders, while Public Relations roles primarily deals with creating and producing informational and promotional materials for distribution, often through traditional and digital channels like newsletters, press releases, social media, email, and so on.

Communications

  • Audience Analysis and Segmentation
  • Channel Identification and Selection
  • Collaboration / Partnering
  • Developing written materials and digital content
  • Foundations in Health Communication and Marketing
  • Implement communications plans and programs such as research programs and results
  • Message Development and Testing
  • Oral and Written Communication

Public Relations

  • Decision Making
  • Public Communications and Outreach
  • Stakeholder Management
  • Multimedia Technologies
  • Planning and Evaluation
  • Perform client services and outreach activities
  • Written Communication

Paid Media Advertising is similar to a Budget Analyst role where you’re creating media plans, setting up advertising campaigns that have a budget behind it, and optimizing KPIs to meet media goals. Oftentimes, something like an influencer campaign blurs the lines between Paid and Organic, but tends to stay within the “Paid Media” budget at advertising agencies. Social Media (Organic) more-so deals with content creation, posting across social media channels, and managing community comments.

  • Advertising strategy and media planning
  • Budget analysis and budget management
  • Campaign management
  • Data analysis and reporting
  • Performance monitoring
  • Market insights (trends and research)
  • Optimizing campaigns
  • Provide insights and recommendations

Social Media

  • Copywriting, content creation and content management/curation
  • Community Engagement
  • Develop social media strategies and research
  • Managing content calendars and following editorial/brand guidelines
  • Project Management
  • Scheduling/Publishing social media posts
