Connection as My Compass: 6 Ways It Shows Up

I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about the common thread that connects the different parts of my life.

On paper, my experiences may seem like different chapters: marketing, communications, creative work, community-building, writing, music, and the many relationships that have shaped me along the way.

But underneath all of it, I keep coming back to the same thing:

Connection.

Connection is the thread that ties everything together.

I believe people thrive when they feel connected– to themselves, to each other, and to something larger than themselves. In a world that often moves quickly and rewards efficiency, productivity, and constant output, I believe there is value in slowing down, paying attention, and creating space for real connection.

To me, connection means feeling seen, understood, and part of something meaningful.

These are the 6 ways connection shows up in my life and work.

1. Connection With Myself

Before we can connect with others, we have to understand ourselves.

Throughout my life, curiosity and reflection have been some of the ways I’ve stayed connected to myself. I’ve always been drawn to asking questions, exploring different perspectives, and understanding why people think, feel, and experience the world the way they do.

Writing, journaling, reading, and creative expression have given me space to reflect, process experiences, and better understand myself. That self-awareness has shaped the way I connect with others and the way I move through the world.

This foundation of curiosity eventually led me to study the liberal arts and humanities, where I could continue exploring storytelling, culture, creativity, and the human experience.

Some of the ways this has shaped my journey:

  • My love of reading, writing, and journaling began as a way to explore my own thoughts and experiences. Over time, that curiosity grew into a desire to help others learn and communicate, including through freelance English tutoring.
  • My interest in photography began as a way to capture moments, relationships, and memories. That curiosity eventually developed into creative projects in college and freelance work.
  • These passions led me to study Comparative Literature and Visual Arts at Rutgers University, where I explored how people create meaning through stories, images, culture, and shared experiences.

2. Connection With Others

Some of the most meaningful moments in my life have come through relationships: conversations that shift my perspective, people who make me feel understood, and unexpected connections that turn into meaningful friendships.

I’ve often been described as a social butterfly– the person who notices when someone is standing alone, starts conversations, and naturally brings different groups of people together.

I’m curious about people’s experiences and perspectives, and I believe everyone has a story worth understanding.

I’ve found connection with others through:

  • Being the person who introduces people because I genuinely think they would enjoy knowing each other.
  • Starting conversations with strangers, coworkers, and new acquaintances because I believe connection often begins with a simple hello.
  • Building relationships with people beyond a specific role, project, or circumstance because I believe relationships are at the center of everything we do.

3. Connection Through Community

Community is where individual connections become something bigger.

I believe communities are built through shared experiences– the moments where people gather, contribute, support one another, and feel connected to something they care about.

Creating community is not just about bringing people into the same space. It’s about creating an environment where people feel welcomed, valued, and like they have a place to belong.

My connection to community has grown through:

  • Staying connected to local communities through social groups, professional networks, neighborhood connections, and shared interests.
  • Creating and growing a local music community centered around a shared love of live music and bringing people together through events and experiences.
  • Hosting gatherings and creating opportunities for people to meet, connect, and build friendships.

4. Connection Through Communication

Communication is one of the strongest tools we have for creating understanding.

The words we choose, the stories we tell, and the way we listen all shape how people experience the world around them.

I’ve always been interested in the ways communication can help people feel understood– whether that is through a personal conversation, a piece of writing, or a message shared with a larger audience.

Communication has allowed me to:

  • Use writing and storytelling to explore ideas, share experiences, and help people connect with information in a more meaningful way.
  • Create messages that feel human, thoughtful, and relevant, whether I’m communicating with an individual, a community, or a larger audience.

5. Connection Through Art & Creativity

Art has always been one of the ways I connect with the world beyond myself.

Creativity allows us to step into different perspectives, explore experiences beyond our own, and better understand the people and cultures around us.

Whether through a painting in a museum, a film that changes the way we see a story, a song that captures an emotion we couldn’t name, or a photograph that preserves a moment in time, art reminds us of what we share as humans.

For me, creativity is a bridge between people, ideas, and experiences.

Art and creativity have helped me:

  • Discover new perspectives by exploring different cultures, histories, and lived experiences through literature, film, music, and visual art.
  • Connect with people and communities I may never have encountered otherwise by experiencing their stories and creative expressions.
  • Find common ground through shared experiences, emotions, and ideas, even across different backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Bring curiosity and imagination into my own work, whether through creative projects, storytelling, or problem-solving.

6. Connection Through Collaboration

Some of the most meaningful things we create are created together.

I’ve always been drawn to collaboration because bringing together different perspectives, experiences, and ideas is where new possibilities emerge.

I believe innovation often happens when people are willing to listen, build on each other’s ideas, and connect perspectives that may not have otherwise crossed paths.

Collaboration has allowed me to:

  • Bring new ideas and perspectives to the table by connecting insights, creativity, and different points of view.
  • Build on the ideas of others and help transform individual thoughts into stronger collective solutions.
  • Work across different teams, disciplines, and personalities to find common ground and move ideas forward.
  • Create environments where people feel comfortable sharing ideas, asking questions, and contributing their unique strengths.

Connection Is Something Worth Holding Onto

Connection is the thread that ties together how I approach relationships, creativity, community, and work.

It is also the glue that holds the different parts of my life together– the reason I care about the projects I contribute to, the communities I build, and the experiences I help create.

Whether I’m building a campaign, creating content, bringing people together, or simply having a conversation, I’m always looking for ways to create more understanding, belonging, and shared experience.

In a world that moves quickly, I believe connection is something worth slowing down for.

And it’s something worth holding onto.
